AbstractPortrait and biographical sketch of William Volker (1859-1947), "manufacturer and philanthropist" of Kansas City. Native of Germany emigrating to Chicago in 1871 and coming to Kansas City in 1882 as a window shade manufacturer and carpet dealer with branch factories across the West. Charity and civic activist upon business retirement with establishment of the "William Volker Charities Fund" in 1932 and "the Kansas City Board of Parole and Pardons" in 1909 and "the teachers' savings and retirement fund" in 1924, and co-organization of the University of Kansas City in 1930, the Florence Crittenton Home for Negro Girls, and "the Helping Hand Institute," etc.
