Claiborne, "of Virginia, a prominent lawyer of those days [the late 1850s]," and successor to "Colonel Chiles" as manager of the American Hotel, or American House hotel, "the only hotel in the town." Description of Claiborne's pro-Union speech in 1860 in the courthouse and defense of the Union throughout Missouri during the Civil War, dying in Saint Louis in about 1897.
