AbstractPhoto of Dr. Johnston Lykins (1800-1876), illustration of his home (built in 1857 at 12th and Washington Streets), and biographical article describing his life and career as a Baptist missionary, realtor, doctor, native of Virginia, and first legal mayor of Kansas City. Also "in charge of the first post office west of Independence" at the Shawnee mission in Kansas in 1831; editor and publisher of "the first newspaper in Indian language" at the mission; realtor with land on the Riverfront; "host to Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, explorer John Charles Fremont and other notables" at his first home at 2nd and Wyandotte Streets; and "for a number of years president of the Mechanics Bank of Kansas City."
