TitleAccount of the Battle of Westport and Early Memories of Kansas City
AbstractPhoto and autobiographical article about the early Kansas City reminiscences of Mrs. Roma Johnson Wornall, or Roma Wornall (1846-1933), third wife of Westport pioneer John Bristow Wornall (1822-1892). Description of Roma as a native of Howard County, Missouri coming to Kansas City in 1866 as the third wife of John after the death of his second wife Eliza Wornall (Roma's cousin), residing at 9th and Main Streets until moving to 910 Locust Street about 1868 and about 1874 to the Wornall home at 61st Terrace and Wornall Road. Also descriptions of the local Wornall family including patriarch Richard Wornall, father of John Wornall, arriving in 1833 from Kentucky to purchase "the land where the Old Wornall Homestead is now from Mr. Calvin McCoy," and their involvement in the Civil War and local real estate transactions.
NotesThis source indicates the arrival of Richard Wornall in Jackson County as being in 1833, while the November 1963 issue of the same magazine, on page 11, indicates it as being in 1843.
