| Notes | David Newson, an Oregon Trail journalist in 1851 wrote to the editors of the Illinois Journal: "Perhaps there may be some, who like us, may take a pleasure trip over the plains next spring to the land of promise, from the Western State. I have much to write about, which might enterain your readers; but I know of nothing so important to next years emigrants, as a correct knowledge of what they need as outfits to prepare them for a long and perilous journey. My experience has been dear bought...of the toils, dangers, excitements and losses, I knew less than nothing. But I have seen the elephant, and my traveling propensities are cured. My expenses and losses since I left your city, on the 2nd of April, 1851, are $2,375." |
