AbstractGeorge Caleb Bingham painted Deane and entitled his picture "Major Deane in Jail". Deane, a Baptist minister, was in jail because of the loyalty oath. Although he sided with the Union, he had assisted Southern sympathizers who needed assistance. Bingham painted Deane to show his contempt for the Union oath required at the time.
NotesAbner Holton Deane settled in Cass County in the 1850s and died in Harrisonville, November 18, 1912. He wrote his memoirs in 1903.
