Not available online
TitleRaising the Stars & Stripes Over Louisiana Territory
AbstractShort article that describes the actual ceremonies when the Louisiana Territory was turned over to the United States. It includes mention of the transfer of title from France to the United States in New Orleans on December 20, 1803 as well as the ceremony denoting the transfer of administrative control of Upper Louisiana held in St. Louis on March 9, 1804.
NotesStoddard, who became military-civil governor of Upper Louisiana, then inspected the Spanish defenses of the city [St. Louis], along with two of the Americans who were on hand to witness the ceremonies. Those two witnesses, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, had come down to St. Louis from their nearby encampment in Wood River, in what is now Illinois, near the east bank of the Mississippi River.
