| Notes | The 8th Street Tunnel was designed by Robert Gillham, who began working on it early in 1887; tunneling the bluff began in April of that year. It cost about $150,000, was 810 feet of 8.8 % grade, 28 feet wide and 21 feet high, capable of accommodating double track. It was built by the Inter-State Consolidated Rapid Transit Railway to connect its elevated street railway with Downtown Kansas City, Missouri, with Union Depot. Revenue service began on April 24, 1888. In 1892 and 1893 the system's cable cars were replaced by electric cars. The tunnel remained a principal entry into Downtown Kansas City until the end of the street car era. |
