TitleBefore the Wagons Came
AbstractArticle details the history of the fur trade in the Pacific Northwest. The trade in this region was initiated by John Jacob Astor, who founded "Fort Astoria" at the mouth of the Columbia River from which to send ships loaded with his furs to Canton, China.
NotesAstor's plan was to establish a number of "depots" down the Missouri River to aid the shipment of furs from the inland to the Pacific Northwest.
