AbstractArticle describes the phenomenon of "mail-order brides" in the western United States during the 1800's. A situation rooted in the fact that many western settlers were unmarried men who set out alone, thousands of women in the east were matched with suitors via weeklies such as the Matrimonial News, published in San Francisco and Kansas City.
