| Title | Gas Industry Observes Its 150th Anniversary This Year |
| Abstract | Forty-nine years after the forming of the first manufactured gas company in Baltimore and 44 years after natural gas was first used for commercial purposes, the first gas company was organized in Kansas City. The year was 1865 and the company operated under the names of the Kansas City Gas Light & Coke Company. The original gas works were actually built about 1866. The firm had less than 200 customers. Its business office was located at 18 West Missouri Avenue in a one-story building about 20 by 30 feet. A basement in the building was used for storage. For further information on the history of the Gas Service Company see the clipping files. |
