TitleThe Romantic Story of the Man Whose Fortune Built the Gilliss
AbstractPortraits and biographical article about William Gillis (1797-1869), an early settler of Kansas City in the 1830s building a mansion in 1842 at 2727 Holly Street, with much description of his early life, including his start at age 14 as a sailor in Baltimore harbor off his native Maryland.
NotesThe "Gilliss" of the title refers to the Gilliss Opera House, built with his fortune after his death, and the "romance" of the title refers to the "romance of the seas, as later the romance of the West."
