TitleNew Madrid Is Our Disaster In Waiting
AbstractArticle discusses earthquake preparedness in the state of Missouri if the New Madrid fault produces a major earthquake soon. "The New Madrid Fault could affect an area running from Memphis, Tenn., through northeastern Arkansas, southeastern Missouri and north to St. Louis, crossing the river into Illinois. Scientists say there is a greater than 90 percent chance of a quake measuring at least 6.0 along the New Madrid Fault in the next 25 years." According to the article, if an 6.7 magnitude quake happened, in Kansas City it would wake you up, open and close doors, break dishes, crack windows and upend small objects. An 8.6 magnitude quake would do much worse damage in this area.
