AbstractA portrait of Irene Ruiz, former Kansas City Public Library librarian serving in the West Side community, now hangs in the Irene H. Ruiz Biblioteca de las Americas library located at 2017 W. Pennway. The portrait was done by Bob Walkenhorst. Mrs. Ruiz is credited with building up a large collection of Spanish language books and materials in the library before she retired in 1996. She also conducted oral histories in the 1970s with people in the Hispanic community. The portrait can be seen in one of the photographs with the article.
