| Abstract | African American jockeys once dominated the sport of horse racing and won the Kentucky Derby 15 of the first 28 times it was run. Lonnie Clayton was an early African American jockey from Kansas City, winning the Derby in 1892 at age 15 and riding Azra. Historians don't know when or where Mr. Clayton died.
