AbstractPaper about the life of Cornelius Gilliam, a western explorer born probably in North Carolina and moving to Clay County, Missouri, by 1821. He became sheriff during the Blackhawk War and the Mormon expulsion, moving with his family to the Oregon Territory in 1844 by way of the Oregon Trail.
