TitleZebulon Pike
AbstractPortraits, photos, and information on Captain Zebulon Montgomery Pike, or Zebulon Pike (ca. 1779-1813), "the discoverer of Pike's Peak in Colorado" in 1806 and an early western explorer "regarding this state [Missouri] as his home." Born in New Jersey and sent on two expeditions by Upper Louisiana territorial governor James Wilkinson just after the Lewis and Clark expedition with the purpose of obtaining extensive information on the new territory and establishing American claims to the land. Captured on second expedition to Santa Fe by the Spanish with his notes confiscated but reconstructed in a 1810 book ("the inpiration for the first journey there by Capt. William Becknell of Missouri and his men") before being killed in the War of 1812 Battle of New Orleans.
