Born July 24, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri. Youngest of 10 children. Attended W.W. Yates Grade School. Mother, Eva White. Attended Spiritual Church.
Remembers late great Charlie Parker since age of five. Jay McShann Band was featuring him. At that time he wanted to be a drummer. At age of 13 Mother bought him a saxophone. Charlie Parker – greatest single direct force upon him and the second was John Coltrane.
Began to play around 1950 with older musicians and joined union at 15. Local musicians of the time that he played with were Richard Guy Smith, Sylvester White, Jay McShann, Albert King. Played at Orchid Room with Eddie Baker Band. (Eddie Baker is now director of Charlie Parker Center). Everybody played at the Orchid Room at that time. Charlie Parker's influence on music at that time.
Music- A Major Science in Universe and its influence on peoples' minds. Billy Holiday at Orchid Room. Kansas City as a Center of Musical Culture in the 30's and 40's. Count Basie, Lester Young, Jimmy Russen, Billy Holiday.
Analysis of type of music played in the 60's to the present and influences. Next sound will come out of Kansas City, the narrator predicts. Kansas City has a lot of untapped resources in the music field. Charlie Parker Center is very unique. It has survived 15 years of opposition. Everyone of the instructors from the same neighborhood and all played with Eddie Baker, director of the center.
