| Abstract | Discovered by accident on historic September 11, 2001, Riverbluff Cave near Springfield yields evidence of ice age species including turtles, wooly or new species of mammoth, armadillo, ice-age pig, 700-pound American lion, and the short-faced bear which is the largest bear that ever lived, standing six-feet tall on all fours. TIn order to protect the cave's environment, the public is not allowed in the cave, but a small museum on site, at 2327 W. Farm Road 190 in Springfield, tells its story. A new 5,000-square foot facility is planned. |
