AbstractFeature article about Shirley Helzberg and her many contributions to improving Kansas City through not only the arts but restoration of historic buildings. The 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall in the new Kauffman Performing Arts Center is named for her and husband Barnett. Includes a sidebar, "Opening Extravaganza" with the opening performances for the Performing Arts Center, Friday, September 16, Placido Domingo at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, home to the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Ballet; September 17, Itzhak Perlman and Diana Krall perform in the symphony's new home Helzberg Hall; and September 18, the Kauffman Center Open House will be free and open to the public with performances in both halls throughout the afternoon. Includes also a picture of the Helzberg-restored Vitagraph Film Exchange Building at the corner of 17th Street and Wyandotte.
