TitleCultivating Community
Extended TitleChurch members forsake the suburbs to put down roots and plant gardens in a struggling neighborhood.
AbstractArticle spotlights Kansas City residents Jason and Candy Fields and other families who have transformed blighted properties in the Lykins Neighborhood into "urban homesteads." More than 20 families have purchased homes in the neighborhood, creating a sustainable and self-sufficient living model through farming and other food production. Many of these residents are former suburbanites and members of the Rock, a non-denominational Christian church whose members establish house churches in the urban core so they can better serve those communities.
