AbstractBiographical sketch of Walter Bales (1803-1887), "one of Kansas City's most honored pioneers," a native of Tennessee coming to Kansas City about 1831 and marrying Sarah Johnson Bales, (arriving in Jackson County in 1825 with her father and dying in 1893) in 1831, moving together to the later site of 14th and Bernard Avenues. Description of Walter's career, starting out as a farmer and becoming "district clerk" for Kansas City schools and a government "magistrate."
NotesPage 243: "Mr. Bales first located in the east bottoms [about 1831], where he lived one winter. There he formed the acquaintance of Sarah Johnson, and. ..the young couple were married, on the 3d of June, 1832. The lady had come with her father to Jackson county in October, 1825, and was therefore one of the very first settlers of all this region."
