| Abstract | Biographical sketch of Dr. Johnston Lykins (1800-1876), the first legal mayor of Kansas City, first postmaster of Westport (out of the Shawnee Mission), and first editor and publisher of a newspaper entirely in Indian language. Description of his life and career as a native of Virginia and Baptist missionary coming to Kansas City about 1830, "edit[ing] the 'Siwinowe Kesibwi' (Shawnee Sun), the first newspaper to be published exclusively in an Indian dialect." Also an intermittent doctor, real estate developer starting in 1856 with the Lykins Addition, and president of Mechanics Bank in 1859 after his mayorship. |
