AbstractPhoto and bio of Phoebe Jane Routt Ess, or Phoebe Ess (1850-1934), "the dean of Missouri clubwomen." Description of her life and career as a native of Kentucky coming to Kansas City in 1872 as a teacher at Washington School, then entering the club profession in 1882 with "the Tuesday Morning Study Club." Ess also helped establish the Jackson County Parental Home for Girls and was "the first woman in Kansas City to run for public office."
NotesPage 55: "In 1918 she [Phoebe Ess] allowed her name to be placed nomination on the Citizens ticket for the Kansas City Missouri School Board."
