AbstractChapter about Elijah Barney Ward, or Barney Ward (1813-1865), "[a] builder of Fort Hall [1834)" and "the man who directed the Death Valley '49ers on their supposed 'shortcut' to California." Native of Virginia traveling west of the Rocky Mountains by the 1830s and joining the Mormons during the 1849 Gold Rush before being scalped to death by Indians in the 1865 Black Hawk War in Utah.
