AbstractBiographical sketch of Charles Ashley Smith, or Charles Smith, an architect in the Finance Building. Born in Ohio in 1866 and coming to Kansas City in 1887 as an architect with William Hackney before becoming "the architect for the Kansas City Board of Education" in 1898 and designing many local buildings.
NotesCharles Smith is listed as the designer of the following buildings: the Kansas City Public Library (presumably the old Main Branch Library at 9th and Locust Streets), the Manual Training School, Central High School, the Kansas City Club, the Ivanhoe Masonic Temple, the Rialto Building, the Dwight Building, the Professional Building, "and the Liberal Arts Building of the Univ. of Kansas City."
