Blue River at Independence Avenue
Blue River at Independence Avenue
TitleBlue River at Independence Avenue
DescriptionPostcard of the Blue River at Independence Avenue
Historical ArticleIn the background of this picture of the Blue river at Independence avenue in 1906 is a high, open wagon bridge with several pedestrians leaning on the rail to view the tranquil scene below.

Houseboats line the shady west side of the stream where they were secured by cables and ropes.

According to James Guinotte, who owned such a craft on the Blue, the boats all were privately owned and were used for picnics or as summer homes from mid-April till Labor day. There was also a large community of summer cottages nearby.

A tow or motor boat was used to move the boats, when someone wished a change of location or a trip to the nearby Missouri river.

Today a viaduct crossed the stream and the surrounding area is completely absorbed by industrial plants of the Sheffield district.
