DescriptionPostcard of the George B. Peck Dry Goods Company building
Historical ArticleThe George B. Peck Dry Goods company was formerly the Doggett Store Co., owned by John Doggett, early day merchant who opened his first store in Kansas City in 1866.

Young George B. Peck, son of an affluent merchant and Detroit banker, came west in 1889 and bought a block of stock in the Doggett store, immediately taking an active part in the management. He had learned merchandising in Detroit under his father's tutelage and in other Eastern emporiums.

He served as director and vice-president before buying out Doggett's interest in the store in 1898. Directors voted in 1901 to change the name of the company to the George B. Peck Dry Goods company.

Peck was known for his charities and good works for his employees. Before the store installed overhead wires carrying baskets with purchase and money, young boys and girls were employed to run with these items to a central cashier. After making a sale the clerk would cry Cash and a young cash boy or girl would quickly appear.

Schooling was rather sketchy for these children, who needed the jobs and preferred them to school. Peck established a school in one corner of the carpet room in his store for the cash boys and girls. He furnished books and stationery and paid the teachers. Hours were from 8 to 10.

The store closed early in 1964 after 77 years' operation. September 16 of that year Foreman-Clark leased the Main street building, where it continues operation today.
