Baltimore Hotel, Pompeian Room
Baltimore Hotel, Pompeian Room
TitleBaltimore Hotel, Pompeian Room
DescriptionPostcard of the Pompeian Room in the Baltimore Hotel
Historical ArticleThe elegant Pompeian Room in the old Baltimore Hotel (formerly located between 11th and 12th on Baltimore) was the most popular of the hotel's dining rooms.

Pompeian red, green onyx and gold leaf gave a luxurious tone to the room. At one end was a fountain of Carrara marble, brought from Europe by the hotel's architect, Louis Curtiss.

At the time of the Democratic National Convention in 1900 the hotel was described as with but a single exception, the largest hotel in America outside of New York. (The Palmer House in Chicago was larger.)

In 1915 the Pompeian Room was air-conditioned and became the first public dining room in Kansas City to boast such a luxury. The room seated 700 persons.

During the cabaret era the decor of the room was changed. It was transformed into a bower of imitation trees, vines and trellises.

One of the last events held in the Pompeian Room was the annual Junior League dinner dance and style show. Individual tables were removed and replaced by long banquet tables in U shape, with a runway built for the models.

The hotel was closed Aug. 6, 1938, and razed in 1939 following an auction of the hotel's fixtures and furnishings. A 4-level parking facility and shops were built on the old site. Now these are to be demolished to make way for an urban renewal project, which will extend from 11th to 12th, Main to Baltimore.
