American Bank Building
American Bank Building
TitleAmerican Bank Building
DescriptionPostcard of the American Bank Building at 8th and Delaware
Historical ArticleThe American Bank Building at the northwest corner of 8th and Delaware was erected in 1887-1888. Occupants were the American National Bank and the Kansas City Safe Deposit and Savings Bank.

Hoye's city directory for 1888 listed H. P. Stinson, president, and D. V. Rieger, cashier of the American National Bank. A branch bank at 1300 Union Avenue, with J. E. McKee, manager, was also listed. The 1906 post card shows only horse-and-buggy vehicles. A fruit- and newsstand is at the corner.

When the American Bank Building was being modernized in 1931, the proud story of business at the bank was revealed in paper litter on the basement floor. (It was being modernized for general offices of the Kansas City Public Service Company.) Workmen found a certificate for 10,000 shares of stock in the Great Republic Gold Mining Company of Cripple Creek, Colo., valued at $1 a share, dated 1896 and issued to a Topeka, Kan., man.

The once treasured documents and old canceled notes on the basement floor indicated Kansas City was sending considerable surplus cash to the mountains of Colorado during the '80s and '90s.

In recent years the beautiful 8-story building, with an attractive front of bowed windows and cut stone work, was razed. The site is now being used as a parking facility.
