TitleFort Scott, KS - Natural Gas Well
DescriptionPromotional postcard of a natural gas well at Fort Scott, Kansas
Historical ArticleThe promotional post card pictures a natural gas well at Fort Scott, Kan. Gas was discovered at Fort Scott in 1887.

Noble L. Prentis's Kansas history states: The first great gas well was opened near the end of 1895. The gas rushed upward with a roar as if a hundred locomotives were letting off steam at once. Later the gas territory developed over an area of some 80 square miles.

The legend on the reverse side of the card urged manufacturers, investors and speculators to locate in Fort Scott and suggested traveling to the area by way of the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad.

The old advertising card boasted that gas wells of Fort Scott were the largest wells west of the Mississippi and in addition to that the town had four of the largest flowing artesian wells in the state, the finest cement rock, the finest flagstone and building stone, unlimited supplies of coal, fire brick and pottery clay and the Great Parkinson Sorghum Sugar Works.

The final inducement to investors stated: Fort Scott will give a 300-horsepower natural gas well and two acres of ground to any factory employing 60 hands.
