Budd Park
Budd Park
TitleBudd Park
DescriptionPostcard of Shelter at Budd Park
Historical ArticleBudd Park, located at the southeast corner of St. John and Brighton, was Kansas City's third park and was acquired in 1892, 1901 and 1902.

The original 20 acres was a gift to Kansas City by Azariah Budd in 1891; four more acres were donated later by Mrs. Budd and the rest was acquired by condemnation.

The shelter house as shown on a photographic post card was erected in 1895 by L. G. Jeffers, contractor.

A souvenir booklet printed by the Board of Park Commissioners in 1920 contained this description: The park has a thriving playground that has the rare advantage of plenty of shade and green grass. Also there is the most popular wading pool in the city because it is large and deep, in fact it should be called a semi-swimming pool. There were also four tennis courts, roque courts and shady spots for picnicking.

An entry from an old park board record book dated July 30, 1902, reads: The Metropolitan Street Railway Company was granted the privilege of maintaining a band for music and picture show, daily except Sunday at Budd Park.

The message on the post card was written in German by the mother of Mrs. Anna Lengel of Kansas City and reads: with love from your mama.
