TitleMission Hills Kansas Home
DescriptionPostcard of Mission Hills Kansas home of Dr. Sam Roberts
Historical ArticleThe old post card pictures an early Mission Hills residence at Mission Drive and Overhill Road, the Mediterranean-style home of the late Dr. Sam Roberts, well-known ear, nose and throat specialist.

According to Miller Nichols this area was originally a rock quarry. Rock was hauled from the quarry by horse teams and used to build the roads in Mission Hills.

Dr. Roberts had owned an adjoining homesite since 1926 and bought the quarry site from the Nichols Company with the idea of developing a rock garden and pool. Hare & Hare, landscape architects, made studies of the rugged spot and a pool was formed and plantings established, with ascending turf carpets broken here and there by jutting rocks. A small summer house with poplar trees at either side was erected near the pool.

The Roberts residence was built in 1930 and was designed by Texas architects Ayers & Ayers. The present owners have rehabilitated the pool area and have restored the original beauty of the rock garden with plantings of flowers and shrubs.

The post card was published in Alsace, a French province, by Jno. Straley of Kansas City. A picture similar to the one used on the post card was printed July 12, 1936, in the rotogravure section of The Star, with the caption, Sunken Garden suggests Italian Villa.
