| Title | City Market, Market House |
| Description | Postcard of the Market House and old City Hall at the City Market |
| Historical Article | An old post card published by Paul Eskensay of Kansas City, mailed here in 1910, shows the old City Market and the red brick City Hall at 4th and Main in the background.
Three street cars, loading and unloading those who have come for the farmers' fresh produce, add to the heavy horse and wagon traffic.
Even before erection of the first market house at this site in 1858, the public square was a busy place. Early in the 18th century river boats from St. Louis loaded with provisions, ammunition, new settlers and news landed at the nearby Missouri River landing. Early settlers gathered at this point to purchase supplies from incoming river boats and either sell or trade their home-grown produce, furs and other commodities. The location was a natural for a market.
