Grand Avenue, North from 12th Street
Grand Avenue, North from 12th Street
TitleGrand Avenue, North from 12th Street
DescriptionPostcard of Grand Avenue, North from 12th Street
Historical ArticleThe seven-story Robert Keith furniture store at the southeast corner of 11th and Grand appears on an early post card, obviously mistitled by the publisher as Main Street, North from 12th. Other well-known landmarks such as the dome of the old postoffice at 8th and Grand, The Kansas City Star building at 11th and Grand, and the Grand Avenue entrance to Emery Bird Thayer's all prove this to be an error.

Robert Keith, native of Lexington, Mo., who left school at the age of 13, had worked as manager of Colonel Abernathy's store in Leavenworth and for nine years operated his own furniture store in Leavenworth before he sought Kansas City as a larger field.

He came to Kansas City in 1881 and opened his first store here in the spring of 1882 at 811-13 Main. Keith's residence was on Independence Avenue, and he often rode horseback to his store, returning home daily for lunch. He died in 1940 at the age of 95.

Emery Bird Thayer and the three-story Kansas City Star building occupied the opposite corners at 11th and Grand.

Traffic seems about equally divided by horse and buggy and early automobiles. Pedestrians cross the street at will without benefit of traffic lights.

The Elite Post Card Co. published the card about 1910.
