Gladstone Boulevard, South from Thompson
Gladstone Boulevard, South from Thompson
TitleGladstone Boulevard, South from Thompson
DescriptionPostcard of Gladstone Boulevard, South from Thompson
Historical ArticleGladstone was Kansas City's first boulevard constructed under the Board of Park Commissioners. Construction began in 1895. For many years it was Kansas City's most fashionable address.

The 1909 post card, published in color in Germany, shows the handsome El Detora apartments at 500-506 Gladstone. A uniformed doorman usually stood at the entrance. Halls inside stairways and apartments were spacious. Long living rooms opened onto the balconies with iron railings. Originally there were 16 three-bedroom apartments. Later the name was changed to Barbara Worth apartments. Some of the apartments were divided into smaller units.

In the background can be seen the round dome of the Independence Avenue Christian Church at Independence and Gladstone. Some called it the R.A. Long church, because the wealthy lumberman had given $70,000 of the $125,000 it cost to build and furnish it in 1905.

Howe, Hoit & Culter, architects, designed the church as nearly to a pure, Greek Ionic style as was compatible with the requirements of church usage.

Dr. John A. Brooke was the first pastor and served five years. He was succeeded by Rev. George H. Coombs, whose son later married Loula Long.

Today the wide tree-lined boulevard, church, residence and apartment appears much as they did on the old post card mailed to Keokuk, Iowa, April 1910.
