| Historical Article | A night scene looking north on Main Street from 12th is pictured on a post card published by the Elite Post Card Company of Kansas City, about 1904. The moon shines brightly on a street crowded with shoppers, and every store is ablaze with lights.
None of the buildings was taller than four stories. It would not be until 1907 that the first skyscrapers, Scarritt, Commerce Trust and Long, were erected.
The street clock of Frederick W. Meyer Jewelry appears at the left. Street signs of the S.H. Knox 10-cent store and May-Stern, carpets, furniture and stoves, are further north on the block. Berkson's ladies ready-to-wear is near the end of the block.
On the right the triangular street sign on Browning-King, a store for men and boys, hangs at 11th (Petticoat Lane). This site is now occupied by the 11-story Harzfelds building, erected in 1913.
In the distance street cars approach and one automobile is seen. Pedestrians seem to be crossing the street as they please, without benefit of traffic lights or officers.
The entire block of buildings at the left was razed in 1970. Today the block is occupied by City Center Square, downtown's newest office building.
