Main Street, North from 12th Street
TitleMain Street, North from 12th Street
DescriptionPostcard of Main Street, North from 12th Street
Historical ArticleMain Street Looking North from Twelfth, Kansas City, Mo. The Center of Kansas City's Business District is the caption on the reverse side of this colorful postcard mailed from Kansas City to J.S. Asbury, Centralia, Mo., July 12, 1920. The date of the card's publication is not known.

On the corner at the right the long red and gold signs over the doors identify the popular Kresge variety store, which occupied the site for years and was usually crowded with customers.

At the top of the tall building a block north at 11th Street, the letters HA were all that was visible of a large Harzfeld's sign. Kline's store (on the right side of card) extended all the way through to Walnut street. It was razed several years ago.

West on 12th Street and out of sight on the card were luxury hotels, saloons, haberdasheries, news stands, theaters, vaudeville and burlesque houses, eating, drinking and dancing spots and Johnie Kling's billiard hall. There was plenty of entertainment.

Street car service was excellent and cheap. Crowds were heavy, day and night. Good department stores, clothing, food, furniture, jewelry, music and hardware stores were plentiful, their clerks helpful. Favorite stores were like friends. Some old customers actually wept when news came of the closing and razing of the venerable Emery, Bird, Thayer establishment. A symbol gone.
