| Title | City Market |
| Description | Postcard of the City Market at the River Quay |
| Historical Article | Colorful baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables line the sidewalk of the city market near 5th and Walnut on a promotional River Quay postcard.
Sidewalk signs announce such tasty items as fresh grated horseradish, Vita's homemade relish, chow-chow, and hot pepper relish. A generously large scale hangs from the rafters. The canning season is on and the young women shopping are no doubt on the same mission, at the same place and seeing the same kinds of good foods as their mothers and grandmothers before them.
The original market house on city property was erected in 1858. But before that the market square saw busy times. Farmers, their wagons loaded with locally grown produce pulled haphazardly into the square and local housewives came to buy. It could be anything from freshly killed deer meat or rabbit to homemade butter, honey or a crate of luscious cherries. As the season progressed there was change, a variety of appetizing choices.
The old city hall and county courthouse were nearby. Small stores carried clothing, hardware and household tools. There were tea, coffee and imported spice shops.
Several street car lines brought a stream of buyers and carried them home with well filled baskets exuding fragrant aroma and a promise of good meals to come.
Today the fresh produce at reasonable prices and an Old World atmosphere make a visit to the market a rewarding experience.
