Hamilton Airstrip, Overland Park
Hamilton Airstrip, Overland Park
TitleHamilton Airstrip, Overland Park
DescriptionPostcard of an airstrip in Overland Park, KS with accompanying text featuring a Curtis Design Biplane.
Date3/18/1911
Historical ArticleKansas Citians saw their first aeroplane in flight in 1909 when Charles K. Hamilton put on a flying exhibition in Overland Park according to an article in Aviation History in Greater Kansas City by the editors of Historic Aviation magazine. The postcard pictures the plane.

W.B. Strang of the Strang Electric Line made the agreement with Hamilton for the performance. Strang represented the Overland Park Athletic Club. The fee was not disclosed.

Hamilton had just finished making exhibition flights at St. Joseph, Mo., which were said to be the first west of the Mississippi River, with a heavier than air machine.

Hamilton's plane (pictured) was a pusher biplane with a wing span of 26 feet. The engine, built by Curtis, was back of the pilot's seat. It weighed 85 pounds. The wings had bamboo ribs. The fabric was rubberized silk.

Hamilton was a member of the newly organized Curtis Exhibition Team. He was flying the same biplane racer Curtis had flown to win the Gordon Bennett cup at Rheims, France, earlier in the year.

The aviation field at Overland Park lay between what are now 79th and Floyd streets, about a block west of Metcalf.

The postcard, in black and white, was made by snapshot at Overland Park by Carl W. and was addressed to his friend Mr. Arthur Nohden, 224 Oak St., Rosedale, Kansas.

The sender wrote below the picture: This is a view of Hamilton's airship at Overland Park, taken over a year ago. This will be our future means of travel.
