McPherson was born in Kidder, Missouri and lived in St. Joseph and Jefferson City before moving to Kansas City, Missouri. He attended the University of Missouri and was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. He receieved his training at Luke Field in Arizonia and was a pursuit flight commander in the Army Air Corps.
