Transcription: Dear Sir:
Allow me to thank you for the copy of your book, "The Church of Today" which you were kind enough to send me. I confess that I have not had time to look it through as carefully as I should like to do. Of course, I have been led to see and to consider to some extent the conditions that you describe as limiting the growth and power of the church. But I am no philosopher and the problem we have to face here in the South is so immediate and so pressing that I have not had time to gain definite opinions on a subject not intimately related to it. I feel certain a free and frank discussion of the subject, as you have given, will do good, however, and I hope that you may succeed in stirring up serious public discussion of the whole problem. You know, of course, that the church in the South still retains its hold over the masses of the people to a greater extent than the church in the North has done. It is the church which is behind the prohibition movement. The Protestant church seems to need to connect itself with some great moral movement in order to live.
Yours very truly,
Booker T. Washington
