Title: Arthur E. Hertzler, M.D
Description: Postcard of plaque commemorating Arthur E. Hertzler, M.D
Historical Article: Arthur E. Hertzler, M.D., scientist, author, philosopher, philanthropist and friend to mankind was born in July, 1870, and today the old settlers of Harvey County, Kansas, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth with a picnic at Halstead, Kas.
Kansas City claims Dr. Hertzler, too. For 30 years he was a part-time practitioner, teacher and resident of Kansas City, with offices in the Rialto building. Part of the time he commuted between Kansas City and Halstead.
He was widely known from teaching days long ago at the old University Medical College located at Tenth and Campbell streets, and from 1909 until 1944 was at the medical school of the University of Kansas.
Hertzler wrote more than 20 medical books in the medical style, but when in 1938 he wrote The Horse and Buggy Doctor he won worldwide acclaim, and from then on became known by that title.
Dr. Logan Clendening wrote of him in 1944: He posed as a common-sense horse-and-buggy doctor. He had common sense all right, but those of us who knew him disregarded his pose because to our knowledge he was one of the best-informed, most brilliant and learned surgeons of the country.
He started a hospital in an old frame house in Halstead, Kas. where he had begun his career in 1894. This developed into a $600,000 block-square institution, which he sold to a Catholic society for $1.
He died in Halstead in 1946 at the hospital he had founded more than 40 years before. His wife, Dr. Irene A. Koeneke is a member of the hospital staff. The Kansas Health Museum, visited annually by hundreds of schoolchildren, bussed in from outlying parts of the state, was erected in his honor, in Halstead, after his death.
