Title: Samuel Wells (Charlie Pitts), Deceased

Description: Charcoal portrait of deceased Samuel Wells, alias Charlie Pitts, showing unclothed upper torso with bullet hole in upper chest. The drawing is signed by the artist. Below the signature is "Charlie Pitts " written in different handwriting and black ink. At the bottom edge (only partially shown in image), "SAM WELLS alias" is handprinted in blue ink.

Biographical Note: Samuel Wells, alias Charlie Pitts, was a member of the James-Younger gang. Pitts was the only one of the eight-member gang not wounded or killed during the Northfield, Minnesota, bank robbery on September 7, 1876. Clell Miller and Bill Chadwell were both killed. The Younger brothers--Bob, Jim and Cole--were all wounded as well as Jesse and Frank James. After fleeing Northfield, the James brothers split from Pitts and the Younger brothers and successfully eluded the posse. Two weeks later, the posse found the Younger brothers and Pitts, and during the confrontation they shot and killed Pitts.
