Historical Article: The tall gabled slate roof of old City hall forms a picturesque background for the City Market House on this colorful post card published by Knight & Co., of Kansas City, at the turn of the century. The location was Fifth and Main streets. Then, as now, Kansas Citians looked forward to weekly trips to the old market square, where a constant and changing variety of fruits and vegetables has always been available. The old City hall was razed in 1937 during the administration of Mayor Bryce B. Smith and the space was used for additional market buildings. Today wholesale fruit and vegetable facilities surround the district. Kansas City Times, March 20, 1971.
